Turn to Luke 24:36-48

While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." [37] They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. [46] He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, [47] and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Now let’s go look for Jesus written in the Law of Moses, the Psalms and the Prophets.
But first a question.
“Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them…But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them… And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, (KJV)
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb…But they urged him strongly, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them…They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together. (NIV)
Jewish week determined by Law of Moses – Christ had to be buried before the Sabbath – Why?
HERE’S ONE LAW OF MOSES that’s related to Christ.
Exodus 20:11
“For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. The seven days are those referred to in Genesis, so what’s significant about the first day of seven”? KJV
“All things were made by Christ; and without Christ was not any thing made that was made.” Col. 1:16,17 and Rev 4:11 also tell us Christ was the Creator.
Genesis 1:1-5
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. [2] And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” KJV
[3]” And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. [4] And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. [5] And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” KJV
The first day and Christ – Jeremiah 33:19-21,
“And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers”. KJV
Jeremiah 33: 25-26,
“Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them”. KJV
Jeremiah was Prophet. Can you see the connection now?

Luke 24:44
“And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me”. KJV
Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD: [20] This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter. [21] I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. [22] The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. [23] This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. [24] This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. [25] Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. [26] Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD. He then began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. [2] At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. [3] But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. [4] Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. [5] He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed. [6] "He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ [7] "But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. [12] Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away. (NIV)
A. Anyone quoting this Psalm and making themselves the subject of the quote, was implicitly declaring themselves King and Messiah of Israel, particularly in the light of the parable (above) about the son of the King who owned Israel’s vineyard (i.e.God).
Psalm 118:24 is where our chorus about a “day to rejoice” comes from! Listen!
This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. (KJV)

Now for two hard questions.
Genesis 1:1-5 gives us the answer.

Got it yet? Remember Jesus’ words in Luke 24:44

He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." (NIV)
A. The only day the Lord ever made was the first one, The one referred to in Genesis – the first day of the first week of the first year. This was when God in Christ invented the day – all the rest have been “repeats”.
It was the day the light shone in the darkness.
Because He made it, the day belongs to Him.
It is right to give it His name.
We can truly call it the Lord’s day!

Come, see the place where the Lord lay. [7] And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. [8] And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.” (KJV)
Matthew 28:1, 5-8

“Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. [20] And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.” (KJV)
“On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" [20] After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.” (NIV)
Look at Luke 24:40-41
“And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. [41] And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?” (KJV)
“When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. [41] And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?” (NIV)
It may have been a while before they could have expressed the correct theology concerning what they saw, but the one thing they knew that filled them with joy – Jesus who was dead, was alive again. They had a real living Messiah! This was a day to rejoice in.
Now look what else God said to Moses about days in the law of Moses
In Exodus 20:11 we read:
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. (KJV)
For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. (NIV)
The Sabbath day was made holy because of God’s creation rest!
Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee. [13] Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: [14] But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. [15] And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day. (KJV)
"Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. [13] Six days you shall labor and do all your work, [14] but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do. [15] Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. (NIV)
(The Israelites needed to be told to do this – so it obviously wasn’t common knowledge)
Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings. [4] These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons. [5] In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD’S passover. [6] And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. (KJV)

[6] On the fifteenth day of that month the LORD’S Feast of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast. And he (Jesus) said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover (14th Abib) with you before I suffer: (KJV)

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) (eg. the 15th of Abib) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. (KJV)
Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath (eg the 15th of Abib). Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. (NIV)
And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just: (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment. (Deuteronomy 5)

There can be no doubt that “This Sabbath day” is the one referred to by Moses in Deuteronomy 5 and Leviticus 23 – but it was not a day to rejoice in. It was not the day the Lord made. It was not a day of salvation – it was a day of sorrow and death!.

[4] While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. [5] In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? [6] He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:” (NIV)
On the first day of the week Christ was risen from the dead? This was also the Day the Lord made! A day you could rejoice in obvious salvation!
While Jesus was on the cross they were scared.
While Joseph collected Jesus they were running away.
While Christ was in the grave the disciples were hiding in fear!
Only after He rose and met with them on that first day did they really know Jesus was the Messiah, the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
Hebrews 4:3-4
For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. [4] For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. (KJV)
Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ " And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. [4] For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work." (NIV)
The same writer also says in Hebrews 10:1 – The law of Moses was a shadow of what was to come. There is no doubt that the Jewish seventh day Redemption from slavery (the law in Deuteronomy 5 and Exodus 20) was a shadow picture of a better Redemption to come – from sin. But, the work to accomplish Redemption from sin had been finished since the foundation of the world – since its creation.
Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. [12] Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. [13] Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; [14] As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: [15] But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; [16] Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. [17] And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: [18] Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; [19] But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: [20] Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, (KJV)
Trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. [12] It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things. [13] Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. [14] As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. [15] But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; [16] for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." [17] Since you call on a Father who judges each man’s work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. [18] For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, [19] but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. The apostle Paul also makes this link more obvious when he tells the Corinthians (2 Cor. 4:6)
“For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” KJV
“For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.” NIV
The 1st day of the week is the only one you could set aside to commemorate Redemption Rest from sin and death and hell, and keep it holy in honour of God’s Creation Rest.
For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. (KJV)
The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming–not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. (NIV)
The law was a shadow – redemption from slavery was but a dim outline of better things to come – redemption from sin, death and hell!
The only way you can continue to stand in a shadow, is if something comes between you and the light? That light is Christ and the only thing that can keep you out of His light is sin! You are refusing to move from being the “Children of Israel” to become the mature “people of God” – joint heirs with Christ.
V1. This is the day the Lord has made, We will rejoice, etc.
V2. This is the day that He rose again. We will rejoice, etc
V3. This is the day that the Spirit came. We will rejoice, etc
– the world was made on the first day of the week.
– Salvation was declared on the first day of the week
– the Holy Spirit came on the first day of the week (Pentecost).
So let us be glad and rejoice in it.
Matthew 21:42

Q. On what day did this happen?
A. The first day of the week when the evidence was undeniable that Jesus was the Christ.
Q. On what day of the week was Christ given a name above all other names?
A. On the first day of the week.
Q. Did any of the prophets link the first day to Christ?
A. Jeremiah 33:19-21 Jer 33:19-21 “And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.” KJV
“The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: "This is what the LORD says: ‘If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time, then my covenant with David my servant — and my covenant with the Levites who are priests ministering before me — can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne.” NIV
