Greek word – Charismata – gifts of grace – occurs 17 times in the New Testament.
They are different from the ‘gifts’ in Ephesians 4:8 where the Greek word is Domata – gifts.
We can compare and contrast 1 Corinthians chapter 12 and Ephesians chapter 4 as follows:-
1 Corinthians 12 | Ephesians 4 |
Gifts of the Spirit of God. Abilities for ministry. Exercised chiefly in the local Church. |
Gifts of the ascended Lord. Persons and classes of ministry. Exercised usually in the whole Church. |
1 Corinthians chapter 12 – the Possession and Purpose of the gifts
1 Corinthians chapter 13 – the necessary accompaniment of the gifts
1 Corinthians chapter 14 – the exercise of the gifts for edification
The Holy Spirit bestows (‘by the Spirit’) is given 5 times – 1 Cor 12:1-11.
The Holy Spirit through the gifts brings the recognition of Christ as Lord –
1 Cor 12:3 & 8.
The Holy Spirit is the distributor of the gifts – 1 Cor 12:7-12.
The Holy Spirit is the Controller of the recipients of gifts – 1 Cor 14:32.
