A) Spiritual Gifts

Introduction:

Greek word – Charismata – gifts of grace – occurs 17 times in the New Testament.

They are different from the ‘gifts’ in Ephesians 4:8 where the Greek word is Domata – gifts.

We can compare and contrast 1 Corinthians chapter 12 and Ephesians chapter 4 as follows:-

1 Corinthians 12 Ephesians 4

Gifts of the Spirit of God.  

Abilities for ministry.       

Exercised chiefly in the local Church.

Gifts of the ascended Lord.

Persons and classes of ministry.

 Exercised usually in the whole Church.

 

Overview:

1 Corinthians chapter 12 – the Possession and Purpose of the gifts

1 Corinthians chapter 13 – the necessary accompaniment of the gifts

1 Corinthians chapter 14 – the exercise of the gifts for edification

Teaching:

The Holy Spirit bestows (‘by the Spirit’) is given 5 times – 1 Cor 12:1-11.

The Holy Spirit through the gifts brings the recognition of Christ as Lord –

1 Cor 12:3 & 8.

The Holy Spirit is the distributor of the gifts – 1 Cor 12:7-12.

The Holy Spirit is the Controller of the recipients of gifts – 1 Cor 14:32.
