The Monarch Whose Reign Will Never End

ALL NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED THROUGH HIM, AND THEY WILL CALL HIM BLESSED (PSALM 72:17)

Psalm 72 Was composed by King David of Israel who had the future reign of his son and heir Solomon in mind. But there are some things contained in the psalm that could never be applied to Solomon. For example, it says, he will endure as long as the sun and moon through all generations (verse 5). Solomon went the way of all flesh and died. Speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, David was referring to One far greater than Solomon or any other Monarch. This psalm is an allegory about the King of Kings and Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ and was written hundreds of years before the Saviour was born. It is marvellous and full of God-given promises and blessings beyond measure. Let us look at some of these.

Verse 2. Speaks of Christ’s righteous judgements, when He returns to this world He will separate the sheep from the goats. The former shall inherit eternal life, the latter eternal damnation (Matthew 25:46). The sheep are those who have accepted Him in trust and obedience to His word.

Verse 4. He will crush the oppressor, defend and save the afflicted and needy. At his return Christ will destroy the antichrist, who at that time shall have dominion over the world. (Revelation 19:20) Also He will imprison the arch-oppressor Satan (Revelation 20:2-3). Later, Satan will be thrown into the Lake of Fire and Brimstone.

Verse 5. Christ’s rule on earth shall be for as long as the sun endures. His kingdom will bring all other kingdoms and systems to an end.(Daniel 7:27)

Verse 6. His presence shall be like showers watering the earth. Never since the fall of man (Genesis chapter 3) will the world have experienced such universal blessings. Wars shall cease, starvation and want shall be unknown. Righteousness and love shall have dominion. All because of the One who is coming to reign.

Verse 8. He will rule from sea to sea. His kingdom will be world-wide. None shall escape being under His authority.

Verse 11. All the rulers in the world will bow down to Him and all nations will serve Him and acknowledge His sovereignty. How much better to do it willingly now, than unwillingly then!

Verses 12 -13. He will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no-one to help. He will take pity on the weak and needy and save the needy from death.
Much of this psalm is futuristic, but some of the important truths contained in it are for the present. For example when verse 6 compares Christ to showers watering the earth, it reminds us of the future spiritual and material blessings that He will bestow on humanity when He bursts through the clouds to establish His rule on the earth. It is however just as significant here and now. Christ is more than a distant figure seated at God’s right hand. His supreme desire is to live in the hearts of people, which He does when they invite Him in. Through the person of the Holy Spirit He will live in our hearts and reign in our lives. If we allow Him.
This coming King of the whole earth who will put down all evil and rule with an iron sceptre, never storms into human hearts, but knocks gently at the door, patiently waiting for admittance. Out of his great love He will sometimes allow trials and pain to come the way of some, for the purpose of them looking to Him who alone can meet the deep needs of the human heart. If anyone shall ask Him in, thanking Him for having died on the cross to blot out their sins and rising again to justify them before God, then they shall experience spiritual showers of blessing that the world knows nothing about. Surely the King on the cross should be the King of our hearts. Anyone who will allow Him to so reign in their lives, shall one day reign with Him in glory. (Revelation 3:21)
