Discerning or Interpreting the Times

Luke 12:54-56

verse 54 – And He said also to the people, "When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is.

verse 55 – And when ye see the south wind blow, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass.

verse 56 – Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern the time?"

The Lord Jesus laid great emphasis on understanding current events. In the above scripture He is refering to His first visitation to the world as the Son of Man and stresses the inability of the people to recognise who was among them and why.

Throughout the scriptures God has revealed to us certain important happenings which would precede both the first and second advents of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus wanted the people to interpret His first appearance even to the point of rebuking them for failing to do so. How do we interpret the days we are living in? Because of improved communication and travel the world is becoming smaller, whilst the threat to mankind is growing larger. We now see the human race in the situation of not knowing where to find security. But anyone who knows Christ also knows that He alone is the centre and source of genuine and lasting security.

What an awsome responsibility this places upon Christians to interpret the times and point others to Him.
