What Jesus Meant in John 14.6

Only the Lord Jesus Christ has said, “I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6.

In looking a little more closely at this awesome statement we can see that the Lord Jesus was confirming His deity in the expression ‘I AM’. God is Spirit and when He spoke to His servant Moses (in Exodus 3:14), He used this expression as a Name for Himself. This is why we also have the title Immanuel (in Isaiah 7:14) which means ‘with us is God’. Jesus is Lord which the early Church believed and proclaimed.

Before becoming a believer you were a sinner. Once you become a believer Jesus becomes your Saviour. Once you call yourself a Christian you have accepted Him as the Lord of your life.

“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. ”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

It is in the area of discipleship then that we see problems within the Christian walk. But the Lord Jesus would not have us to be confused by other voices or writings. He has shown us that He is the Way and the only way, there is no ambiguity in this, no room for discussion or debate. All other ways are erroneous and result in spiritual death for all eternity.

The true Christian then cannot compromise or conform to other ways. This is fundamental to a walk of Holiness of life. To worship with other religions is to deny that the Lord Jesus is the only Way. The Holy Bible sees other religions as demonic (see 1 Corinthians 10:20-22), we are to have no other gods before us including idols and images. Sadly some see themselves as Christians but fall short of the word of God in their way of doing things. Any liturgy which takes us away from the truth of the Holy Scriptures is to be rejected. We must measure and test all things by the Word of God. Otherwise we will surely fall into error. (see 1 Thessalonians 5:21).

Some may disagree, but the Lord Jesus Christ clearly stated that He was ‘the Truth.’ So other opinions do not matter, if you are His disciple then you will only listen to His voice. He did not tell us that others would be sent, He explicitly told us “And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32.

The truth is that you cannot pray to anyone else either. “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” 1 Timothy 2:5. True believers should know then that they cannot ask Mary to intercede for them or answer prayers. We should not call her immaculate only blessed as she herself said future generations would. (See Luke 1:47-48). Only God is Immaculate. Mary’s song known as the ‘magnificant’ has the words “in God my saviour.” She knew she needed a Saviour like everyone else. Mary is not the mother of God but she bore as a mother the Son of God. There is a big difference between this and what some believe! She knew that the Lord Jesus was the Way, the Truth and the Life. Men have added their ways to the ‘truth’ over the centuries leading many away from what was written for us. (see 1 Corinthians 4:6).

To have the ‘abundant life’ that our Lord Jesus promised means to obey and walk by faith. We are told that we are to be a separate people in 2 Corinthians 6:16-18.

“Come out from among them and be separate says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

Being a separate people means we cannot worship with others or accept their religious ways, we can however, pray for them and share with them the truth of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are in the world but not of the world and its ways. The scriptures warn us that a little leaven soon leavens the whole lump. Let us then worship in Spirit and in Truth as the Lord Jesus said true believers would. (see John 4:21-26).

It is then the Holy Bible that guides us in our faith and personal walk with God. It is the all sufficient rule for our faith and conduct in this world. Amen.
