Introduction:
Zekar-yah means ‘Yahweh Remembers’ or Yahweh Has Remembered’.
This key theme dominates the whole book of Zechariah and so Yisrael will be blessed because Yahweh remembers His Covenant He made with their fathers, the patriarchs, Avraham, Yitzhak and Ya’aqov.
Proposition:
There are several key verses that show us this –
Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I am zealous for Yerushalayim and for Zion with great zeal. I am exceedingly angry with the nations at ease. For I was a little angry, and they helped but with evil intent.” Zechariah 1:14-15. (i.e. The Romans, the Arabs, the Nazis et al)
For thus says the Lord of Hosts: “He sent Me after glory, to the nations which plunder you; for he who touches you touches the apple of His eye.” Zechariah 2:8.
Thus says the Lord of Hosts: “Behold, I will save My people from the land of the east and from the land of the west; I will bring them back, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. They shall be My people and I shall be their God, in truth and righteousness.” Zechariah 8:7-8.
‘Yes many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem and to pray before the Lord.’ Zechariah 8:22.
Teaching:
One expression dominates the whole book of the Prophet Zechariah and that is ‘In that Day’.
The Warning –
“And it shall happen In that Day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.” Zechariah 12:3.
“In that Day the Lord will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them In that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the Angel of the Lord before them. It shall be In that Day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.” Zechariah 12:8-9.
(The U.N. and the E.U. and all nations should pay particular attention to these verses)
The Cleansing –
“In that Day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.” “It shall be In that Day,” says the Lord of Hosts, “That I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall be no more remembered. I will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land.” Zechariah 13:1-2.
The Promise –
‘And In that Day, His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west.’
‘It shall come to pass In that Day that there will be no light; the lights will diminish. It shall be one day which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night. But at evening time is shall happen that it will be light.’
‘And In that Day it shall be that living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern sea and half of them toward the western sea; in both summer and winter it shall occur. And the Lord shall be King over all the earth. In that Day it shall be’ – “The Lord is One and His name one.” (Ha Adonai hoo echad ve shelo shem echad)
Zechariah 14:4, 6-9.
The Battle – (The Day of the Lord) –
‘And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem. Their flesh shall dissolve in their sockets, and their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths. It shall come to pass In that Day that a great panic from the Lord will be among them.’ Zechariah 14:12-13a.
The Punishment –
‘And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of Hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the king, the Lord of Hosts, on them there will be no rain. This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep The Feast of Tabernacles.’ Zechariah 14:16-17, 19. (Cf. Revelation 2:7.)
The Twofold Prophecy –
‘In that Day “HOLINESS TO THE LORD” shall be engraved on the bells of the horses. The pots in the Lord’s House shall be like the bowls before the altar. Yes, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holiness to the Lord of Hosts. Everyone who sacrifices shall come and take them and cook in them. In that Day there shall no longer be a Canaanite in the House of the Lord of Hosts.’ Zechariah 14:20-21. (Cf. Isaiah 56:7.)
(Cf. Isaiah 35:8-10.) – The Prophecy of the Lord through Isaiah the Prophet.
Thus says the Lord of Hosts:
In those days ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve
(the corner of a garment – the tzitzith – the thread of light) of a Jewish man, saying,
“Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.” Zechariah 8:23.
