Psalm 8

The Glory of God in Creation.

Introduction:

This Psalm may in some ways be known as the Song of the Astronomer for there is much in the night sky to stand in awe of God’s creation within the universe. The first and last verses are a sweet song of admiration from the mouth of the psalmist as he meditates on the excellence of God’s holy name and His glory which is above the heavens – so we have yet to see God’s best in everything which is fully reserved for the age to come.

Proposition:

The rest of the verses are about two main things within the love and kindness of God through –

                                    1) His creation and

                                    2) His redemption through the Lord Jesus Christ.

We may therefore divide this Psalm into four small sections as follows:

Body of Teaching:

1) The Lord’s Position – verse 1.

The psalmist simply exclaims, “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens!” The psalmist then is unable to properly express the glory of God because only God can fully know His own glory!

2) The Lord’s Power – verses 2 and 3.

Verse 2 – God as Conqueror of the World.

Verse 3 – God as Creator of the World.

3) The Lord’s Presence – verses 4 to 8.

Verse 5a – The way He comes to us

Verse 5b-8 – The way He cares for us.

4) The Lord’s Portion – verse 9.

The last verse teaches us as with verse one how excellent His name is and also that the earth is the Lord’s and so those who are His will one day know just how excellent it can be as he reigns for a 1,000 years on the earth. Equality and equity will at last be seen.
