Psalm 35

THE LORD DELIVERS AND AVENGES HIS PEOPLE.

Introduction:

The psalmist David is showing us that we all need the Lord’s deliverance in two different ways:-

  1. From those who attack you – verses 1 to 10 and (cf Psalm 59)
  2. From those who accuse you – verses 11 to 28. (cf Psalm 55)

The Lord Jesus taught that Satan is a murderer (see John 8:44) and that this evil nature is within men. Through evil people Satan would try and destroy all of God’s children if he could, but if God is for us who can be against us. (Romans 8:31). The Lord delivers so that even death cannot separate us from the love of God. It is an eternal love. (Romans 8:37-39).
We are also taught that Satan is an accuser (see Revelation 12:10) and so he slanders the saints before God as we see in the life of Job. (Job 1:9-11).
We can also see within this psalm that friends can become foes and so the accusations against us can be threefold, internally, externally and infernally. However, when anyone attacks or accuses us they attack the name of the Lord for we are His. We are in covenant relationship and God has made certain promises to us within the scriptures so that we can take comfort as He will always deliver us. David’s life shows us this along with many more of the saints we read of within the Bible. These then are the life lessons for us to learn from.

Body of Teaching:

  1. David Pleads – verses 1 to 8.
    1. He wants his enemies to be defeated – verses 1 to 3.
    2. He wants his enemies to be destroyed – verses 4 to 8.
  2. David Proclaims – verses 9 to 10.
    1. His delight in the Lord – verse 9.
    2. His deliverance in the Lord – verse 10.
  3. David Petitions – verses 11 to 17.
    1. His plight – verses 11 to 12.
    2. His plea – verses 13 to 17.
  4. David’s Praise – verses 18 to 28.
    1. His praise – verse 18.
    2. His prayer – verses 19 to 27.
    3. His profession – verses 28.

Conclusion:

We have therefore been given within the psalms and proverbs all the life application principles to show us how the Lord will guide, guard and grow us. The writers of the psalms are showing that what they went through we can also experience in our lives. The answer is always in the Book and we may note that David calls upon and to the Lord in the first and last verse. His life was in the Lord, he was in covenant relationship as we are and so our enemies are His enemies. When we learn to maintain this covenant bond we shall do well. Amen.
