Psalm 26

(A PRAYER FOR DIVINE SCRUTINY AND REDEMPTION)

Introduction.

The three main themes of these 12 verses in Psalm 26 are:-

Self examination,
Sanctification and
Salvation.

David wants the Lord to search him and so we can see the holiness of life within David through personal consecration showing his godly character and conduct within his life.

Proposition.

Before we look at these three themes there is one other facet of God’s blessings for those who love Him and that is His lovingkindness towards us in verse 3. (cf. Jeremiah 31:3).
We can then trace this divine teaching seen within the Psalms and so rest assured in His promised love and kindness:-

Psalm 26:3 For Your lovingkindness is before my eyes.
Psalm 36:7 How precious is Your lovingkindness O Lord.
Psalm 40:11 Let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me.
Psalm 63:3 Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You.
Psalm 103:4 Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies.
Psalm 138:2 I will worship towards Your holy temple and praise Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth, for You have magnified Your word above all Your name.

Body of Teaching.

There are 6 (the number of man) points within self examination, sanctification, salvation:-

1) An Open Life – verses 1 and 2. ‘Examine me O Lord and prove me.’

2) An Obedient Life – verse 3. ‘I have walked in Your truth.’

3) An Overcoming Life – verses 4 to 6. ‘I have not sat with idolatrous mortals, nor will I go in with hypocrites, I have hated the assembly of evildoers and I will not sit with the wicked.’
NB. These 3 verses show us the Principles of Separation and Sanctification.

4) An Overflowing Life – verses 7 and 8 shows proclamation, thanksgiving and love.

5) An Overshadowed Life – verses 9 and 10 shows David asking for divine protection.

6) An Ordered Life – verses 11 and 12 shows us integrity, redemption, security and finally praise with fellows saints in God‘s House. This is our destiny, Hallelujah.
