This article presents an explanation of how to recognise the true Mashiach – the time of His coming, where He would appear and the special work that He would accomplish, according to the Holy Scriptures which are our guide and source of truth. It is the hope of the writer of this article that you will search the Tanakh to confirm what is stated and that you will prayerfully ask the L-rd to reveal His truth to you.
(All scripture quotations are from the Jewish Bible according to the Masoretic Text)
1. Our Mashiach had to come before the Tribe of Judah lost its tribal identity in 70AD with the destruction of the Temple and the ultimate scattering of Israel by the Romans after the Bar Kochba revolt in 145ad.. Bereishis/Genesis 49:10
"The staff shall not depart from Judah, nor the sceptre from between his feet until peace (Shiloh) come, and the obedience of the people be unto Him."
(Him, being The Lion of Judah, the Messiah).
The word ‘shebet’ means staff as above and it denotes that each tribe had its own staff as an ensign of their authority and identity. In other words the prophet is stating that the tribal identity of Judah would not pass away, as did that of the other tribes of Israel until Shiloh came. The Midrash teaches us that Shiloh is one of the titles of our Mashiach. Only one person came before the Temple was destroyed and He himself prophesied its destruction!
2. Our Mashiach had to come then, before the Temple was destroyed.
"Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto an anointed prince, shall be seven weeks; and threescore and two weeks shall the street be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times. And after threescore and two weeks shall an anointed be cut off, and none will be left to him; and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined."
Mashiach means anointed one and the people that came and destroyed the Temple (sanctuary) were the Romans in 70AD.
Zechariah 11:12-13 also demands that the Messiah come before the destruction of the Temple, for that prediction speaks of ‘thirty pieces of silver being cast to the treasury in the House of the L-rd.’ Let us note at this point that a certain man (Judas) was paid thirty pieces of silver for betraying our Mashiach and afterwards through remorse he threw the thirty pieces onto the floor of the Temple.
3. Our Mashiach had to come 483 years after a specific date in Daniel’s time. Daniel 9:2526
This definite prediction as to the exact time of the coming of our Messiah is one of the most wonderful prophecies in the entire Bible.
The date of the "commandment to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem" was the decree by the Persian King Artaxerxes in 444BC, granting permission
for all Jewish people to return to Israel and rebuild the city and walls of Jerusalem. (See Nehemiah 2:1-8).
The word translated ‘weeks’ in Daniel 9:25-26 means ‘sevens’ and is used for years. (See Genesis 29:27-28 and Leviticus 25:8).
1. The first seven weeks is therefore 49 years (7 x 7). History tells us it took Nehemiah and Ezra and their associates this time period to rebuild.
2. The second period of sixty-two weeks (three score and two) or 434 years (62 x 7) combined with the first period would be the time element until the coming of our Mashiach. 444BC plus 483 years (49 + 434) brings us to 39AD. We must now convert these solar years (of 365 days) back to lunar/prophetical biblical years (of 360 days) also taking into account the extra days during leap years within the 483 years and we then reduce by 7 years to 32AD. Again, only one person claiming to be our Messiah was ‘cut off’ in this time frame prophesied. You may ask yourself… "why do the rabbis forbid the working out of the date of this event?"
4. And most important of all for us to understand, He must be cut off (die) for His people. Daniel 9:26.
“And after threescore and two weeks shall an anointed be cut off "
Only one person who claimed to be our Messiah – and who fulfilled the prophecies and missionary work of the anointed one before being cut off – came before the destruction of the Temple.
Messiah was to be both the Chief Cornerstone as well as a Stone of Stumbling and a Rock of Offence. Psalm 118:22 and Isaiah 8:14
Psalm 118:22: "The stone which the builders refused
is become the head stone of the corner."
In this Psalm, which speaks of G-d’s praise and thankfulness for His everlasting mercy toward His people, we see again messianic inferences of the Mashiach. Also note the same picture given to the prophet Isaiah:
Isaiah 28:16: "Therefore thus saith the L-rd G-d,
Behold, I laid in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious
corner stone, a sure foundation; he that believeth shall not make haste."
Isaiah 8:14: "And He shall be for a sanctuary,
but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the Houses
of Israel "
The last verse gives us the context that it is HaShem speaking to the prophet and we are to hallow Him as well as fear Him! Should we not then search the scriptures together to make sure we understand His way of salvation for us?
He (our Messiah) will either be a sanctuary for you or a stumbling stone and rock of offence to you. Our eternal destiny will be determined by our obedience to His Word which contains His plan of salvation for us to search out and understand.
Isaiah 52:13: "Behold my servant shall prosper,
He shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high."
Before the depth of our Messiah’s humiliation is presented, we are at the outset assured of His final victory and glory!
Isaiah 52:14: “As many were astonished at Thee; saying,
surely His visage is too marred to be that of a man, and His form, to be that
of the sons of men."
Being beaten, flogged and brutally hung from an execution stake would ruin the looks and form of any person!
Isaiah 52:15: "So shall He cause many nations to
be amazed at Him, kings shall shut their mouths; for that which had not been
told them shall they see, and that which they had not heard shall they perceive."
Our Messiah was to bring a message that will startle many nations (the Goyim).
Isaiah 53:1: "Who would have believed our report?
And for whom is the arm of the L-rd revealed?"
The prophet’s words still speak to us today – has the arm of the L-rd been revealed to you? Under the ‘Royal Law’ of HaShem in Leviticus 17:11 blood must be shed for the remission of our sins, this is why our Mashiach must, for Jew and Gentile, shed His blood as an atonement for our sins, as Isaiah chapter 53 clearly states and teaches (see page 6).
Isaiah 22:22-23: “And the key of the House of David
will I lay upon His shoulder; so He shall open and none shall shut, and He
shall shut and none shall open. And I will fasten Him as a nail in a sure
place; and He shall be for a glorious throne to His Father’s house."
Zechariah 13:6: "And one shall say unto Him, What
are these wounds in thine hands?” Then He shall answer, “Those with which I
was wounded in the house of My friends."
All of our sages and rabbis of the ages and the present see this as a direct statement appertaining to the work of the Mashiach on behalf of HaShem. The mission and work of the Messiah was to include the following from the Tanakh:
Be a Sin Offering and Burden Bearer for His People.
Isaiah 53:4-6: "But verily He hath borne griefs
inflicted by us, and suffered sorrows we have caused; yet we did esteem Him
stricken, smitten of G-d, and afflicted. Though He was wounded
through our transgressions, bruised through our iniquities, yet the bond of
our peace is upon Him, and in
His fellowship we shall heal ourselves. All we like sheep have gone astray,
we have turned every one to his own way; and the L-rd hath caused the iniquity
of us all to fall upon Him."
Call the Gentiles to Salvation as well as Israel.
Isaiah 49:6: "And He said, It is a light thing
that Thou shouldest be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to
restore the preserved of Israel; I will also give Thee for a light to the
nations, that My salvation may be unto the end of the earth."
Introduce the New Covenant.
Jeremiah 31:31: "Behold, the days come, saith the
L-rd, that I will make a new covenant with the House of Israel, and with the
House of Judah.
Preach the Good News.
Isaiah 61:1: "The spirit of the L-rd is upon Me,
because the L-rd hath anointed Me to preach good tidings unto the meek; He
hath sent Me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to them that are bound."
If we look around and into history we can see that since Yeshua (Jesus) came, millions have believed in Him for their salvation, including several million Jewish people to-date. This dispels the myth that only a small number of Jewish people have believed in Him.
He, and only He is our prophesied Mashiach as all the scriptures attest.
The Midrash teaches of two positions held by Mashiach, one is as a suffering Servant and the other as a conquering King – what we can now see is that there is a time difference between the two appearances in the physical sense.
Our Mashiach is to return to rescue His people from the nations who come up against Jerusalem (please read chapters 12-14 of Zechariah for yourself).
Then He will:
Rule from David’s Throne. Psalm 45:7 & Psalm 110:
"Thy throne, 0 G-d is for ever and ever, the sceptre of Thy Kingdom
is a right sceptre." "The L-rd said unto My L-rd, sit Thou at My
right hand, until I make thine enemies Thy footstool."
Bring in Peace. Isaiah 9:6:
"For the increase of the government and for peace without end, upon
the throne of David, and upon His Kingdom, to order it, and to establish it
with judgement and with justice; from henceforth even for ever will the zeal
of the L-rd of Hosts perform this."
Bring Everlasting Righteousness. Daniel 9:24:
and to bring in everlasting righteousness…."
We previously looked at the sixty-nine weeks (483 years) but this verse tells us there are 70 weeks (490 years) determined in the prophecy for His people and the Holy City! When Yeshua returns and is acknowledged it will be as a type of Joseph not being recognised for seven years by his brothers. There is then determined by the L-rd a period of seven years in which Israel will be shaken and a remnant will be saved! He himself said "You will not see me again until you cry out Baruch Haba b’shem Adonai!" (Mattityahu 23:39). Through distress, because of Jacob’s Time of Trouble (Jeremiah 30:7), Israel will cry out for Him to come, because He has for the most part been rejected. The nations will also be in turmoil for their rejection of G-d’s Messiah and having gone after other ‘gods’. Yeshua spoke of a time of distress on the earth like no other time. That time is fast approaching when the Day of the L-rd will come on all.
Psalm 51:7: "Behold, I was shapen in iniquity;
and in sin did my mother conceive me."
In the above scripture David (a man after G-d’s own heart) realises his sinful condition. That is why the sacrificial system and priesthood were needed. HaShem’s Royal Law has always been, and still is. (For the law cannot be changed).
Leviticus 17:11: For the life of the flesh is in the
blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for
your soul: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul."
Without our Temple, what are we to do? HaShem has given us the answer in our Mashiach.
The only way of escape and of salvation is through accepting and trusting in Him. Ask the L-rd Yeshua to forgive you of your sins; ask Him into your life as L-rd and Saviour. He is the King of kings and the L-rd of lords. A Jew remains a Jew and a Gentile remains a Gentile culturally, but both become a new person in the Messiah. To listen to anyone else and not the scriptures is foolish. Anyone reading the scriptures for themselves will see that the L-rd has determined to take a people for Himself out of Israel and the Nations who put their trust in Him.
Ask the L-rd to reveal His truth to you – He will!
Signs in the Temple as Confirmation (33 – 7OAD)
1. The lot for the L-rd’s goat did not come up in the right-hand of the
2. The scarlet cord tied to the door of the Temple on the Day of Atonement
stopped turning white after the scapegoat had been cast over the precipice.
3. The westernmost light on the Temple Menorah would not burn. It is believed
that this light was used to light the other lights of the Menorah.
4. The Temple doors would open by themselves. The rabbis saw this as an ominous
fulfilment of Zechariah 11:1: "Open thy doors, 0 Lebanon, that fire may
devour thy cedars."
The opening of the doors (made from the cedars of Lebanon) to let in the consuming fire foretold the destruction of the Temple itself by fire. Yeshua’s words about the Temple were fulfilled as a prophet in 70AD:
Mattityahu 24:24-25: “And Yeshua said unto them, See
ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here
one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down."
The Temple had to be destroyed because in G-d’s pre-determined plan the sacrificial system and the priesthood would be found in Yeshua.

and he that forbeareth, let him forbear…"
